Vrelo Bosne, meaning 'Spring of the River Bosna', is a breathtaking natural park and protected monument located at the foot of Mount Igman, just outside Sarajevo in Ilidža. This 6 km² park is home to the crystal-clear springs where the Bosna River begins its journey. When you stay at our house in Sarajevo, Vrelo Bosne offers the perfect half-day escape into pristine nature - a refreshing contrast to the city's historical sites.
Vrelo Bosne has been a beloved retreat for Sarajevans for over a century. The famous Velika Aleja (Great Avenue), a 3.5-kilometer tree-lined promenade of horse chestnuts and plane trees, was planted in 1892 during the Austro-Hungarian period. The park became a protected natural monument in 1977. During the Ottoman period, this area was known for its healing waters, and the nearby Ilidža spa town developed around these natural springs.
Start your visit with a leisurely stroll or bike ride down the beautiful Velika Aleja from Ilidža to the springs. At the park entrance, you'll find traditional horse-drawn carriages (fijakeri) that can take you through the avenue in style. The park itself features multiple crystal-clear springs bubbling up from underground, creating a network of streams and small waterfalls. Swans and ducks glide across the calm waters, and numerous wooden bridges offer perfect photo opportunities. Several cafés and restaurants are scattered throughout the park.
The park is open year-round, typically from dawn to dusk. Entrance fee is approximately 3-5 KM per person. Horse-drawn carriage rides cost around 30-50 KM for a round trip along Velika Aleja. Bicycle rentals are available near the Ilidža tram terminus. Best visited in spring (when the water flow is strongest) or autumn (for beautiful foliage). The walk from Ilidža to the springs takes about 40 minutes one way.
From our Sarajevo house (Vila Presjenica), Vrelo Bosne is about 25 km away, approximately 35 minutes by car. You can also take public transport to Ilidža tram terminus and walk the scenic Velika Aleja to the springs. This makes for a perfect morning or afternoon trip from our house in Sarajevo, easily combinable with a visit to the nearby Tunnel of Hope museum.
Bring bread to feed the swans and ducks - they're very friendly! Wear comfortable walking shoes. For the best experience, take the horse-drawn carriage one way and walk back (or vice versa). Visit on weekdays to avoid crowds, especially during summer. The park is particularly magical in early morning when mist rises from the springs.
