Perched at 1,495 meters on the southern slopes of Bjelašnica Mountain, Lukomir is Bosnia and Herzegovina's highest permanently inhabited village - and one of its most magical destinations. This living ethnological museum, awarded 'Most Beautiful Village in Bosnia and Herzegovina' in 2023, offers visitors a rare glimpse into a way of life unchanged for centuries. When staying at our house in Sarajevo, Lukomir makes for an unforgettable day trip into the heart of Bosnian highland culture.

Ancient Heritage

Lukomir's history stretches back over 500 years, with medieval tombstones called stećci scattered around the village dating to the 14th and 15th centuries. These UNESCO-protected monuments bear carved symbols depicting aspects of medieval life. The village name is believed to derive from 'luka' (harbor) and 'mir' (peace) - a fitting description for this tranquil highland settlement. In 2009, Lukomir was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in 2023, it received the prestigious title of 'Most Beautiful Village in Bosnia and Herzegovina'.

What to Expect

Lukomir's traditional stone houses, some over 200 years old, feature distinctive cherry wood shingle roofs. The village women still wear hand-knitted garments passed down through generations - colorful woolen socks, vests, and traditional dimije trousers. During summer months (May-October), up to 17 families return to tend livestock and welcome visitors. The village overlooks the spectacular Rakitnica Canyon, an 800-meter drop offering some of the most dramatic views in the Balkans. Local families offer traditional Bosnian food including fresh cheese, kajmak (clotted cream), and homemade bread.

Practical Information

Lukomir is accessible only from late April/May to October - winter snow makes the road impassable. The drive from Sarajevo takes about 1 hour 20 minutes via Bjelašnica Mountain, with the final 11km on a winding gravel road through stunning karst landscapes. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended but not essential in good weather. No entrance fee, but consider buying local products or food to support the villagers. Alternatively, hiking trails from Umoljani village offer a scenic 2-3 hour trek to Lukomir.

Insider Tips

Start early - the village is best experienced in morning light. Bring warm layers even in summer as the altitude makes it noticeably cooler. Pack snacks and water, though local families sell drinks and homemade food. Wear sturdy shoes if you plan to explore the canyon viewpoints. Don't miss the stećci tombstones on the village outskirts. If you're adventurous, consider the hiking trail from Umoljani instead of driving.
