The Tunnel of Hope, known locally as 'Tunel spasa' or 'Ratni tunel', stands as one of the most powerful symbols of Sarajevo's resilience during the 1992-1995 siege. This 800-meter underground passage, built beneath the airport runway, was the only connection between the besieged city and the free world. Today, it serves as a museum and a poignant reminder of the human spirit's ability to endure. When staying at our Sarajevo house, this is one attraction you simply cannot miss.

The History

During the Siege of Sarajevo, the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare (1,425 days), the city was completely surrounded by Bosnian Serb forces. The only way in or out was through a narrow strip of land near the airport, which was under UN control and couldn't be crossed openly. In 1993, the Bosnian Army began digging a tunnel from a private house in the Butmir neighborhood, under the airport runway, to Dobrinja on the other side. Completed in just four months, this 1.6-meter high tunnel became the city's lifeline, allowing the transport of food, medicine, weapons, and people.

What to Expect

Today, about 20 meters of the original tunnel remain accessible to visitors. The Kolar family home, where the tunnel entrance was located, has been converted into a museum displaying wartime artifacts, photographs, and documentary footage. You can walk through the preserved section of the tunnel, experiencing firsthand the cramped conditions that thousands of people endured. The museum also features outdoor exhibits including military equipment and the garden where the tunnel entrance was carefully hidden.

From Our House in Sarajevo

From our house in Sarajevo (Vila Presjenica), the Tunnel of Hope is approximately 20 km away, about a 25-minute drive. We recommend combining this visit with a tour of the city center, as the tunnel is located in the Butmir area near the airport. Our hosts at Vila Presjenica can help arrange transportation or provide detailed directions from our Sarajevo house.

Insider Tips

Visit in the morning to avoid crowds. Wear comfortable shoes as you'll be walking through a low tunnel. The museum can be emotionally intense - it's a real piece of history, not a recreation. Consider hiring a local guide who can share personal stories from the siege era.
